Client to Agent Linking with the ATO Made Simple!

From November 13th, 2023, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) introduced a new client-to-agent linking process for businesses with an Australian Business Number (ABN). This change enhances security and ensures only authorised agents can access your tax information.

If you’re appointing a tax agent, BAS agent, or payroll provider, here’s how you can link them to your business.

Why the Change?

The new process aims to safeguard your tax and super affairs by verifying authorised access, reducing the risk of fraud and identity theft.

Note: Only the business owner (or an authorised representative) can complete the nomination process. Unfortunately, we cannot do it for you but can provide guidance.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Set Up Your Digital Identity (myGovID)

Download the myID app (available in the App Store or Google Play) and verify your identity.

  • For Strong myID: Use an Australian passport and other identity documents (e.g., driver licence, Medicare card).

  • For Standard myD: Verify two Australian identity documents and contact the ATO to complete the next steps.

Step 2: Link Your myID to Your ABN

Use the Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) to link your myGovID to your ABN:

  • Log in to RAM.

  • Select Link Your Business and follow the prompts.

  • If you're not listed as an associate in the Australian Business Register, contact the ATO for assistance.

Step 3: Log in to Online Services for Business

Access ATO’s Online Services using your myGovID.

Step 4: Nominate Your Agent

In Online Services for Business:

  1. Go to Profile > Agent Details.

  2. Select Add under the Agent Nominations section.

  3. Search for your agent using their registered agent number (RAN).

  4. Confirm the agent’s details, complete the declaration, and submit.

Step 5: Notify Your Agent
The ATO system doesn’t notify your agent automatically. Let your agent know you’ve completed the nomination. They have 28 days to accept before the nomination expires.
